In honesty, this section is more difficult in theory than in practice. If you're not careful and go charging into the hordes that bar your way, chances are you will be quickly overwhelmed. That said, if you're careful and take the time to move through the natural gaps and holes in the zombie clusters you should be able to make it back with little trouble.
